“Last year was a challenging one for canola production,” recalls Derek Bruce, Digital Solutions Lead for Bayer. “Of course, that’s just like any other year.” In other words, growing conditions vary significantly in any crop year. For example, canola crop yield and quality can be affected by sclerotinia. A 20% infection can result in a 10% yield loss. And the prevalence of sclerotinia across the Prairies rose to 40% of canola acres in 2025¹.
How FieldView supports sclerotinia management
How can a canola grower better manage the threat of sclerotinia? Derek Bruce says growers who subscribe to FieldView, an all-in-one digital farming solution from Bayer, are better equipped to assess sclerotinia threat and spray when and where it’s needed.
Derek Bruce explains: “FieldView subscribers can see regular field health satellite imagery provided by the service. It shows the variability in any field.” FieldView subscribers who grow canola are especially interested in the Canola Fungicide Digital Insights (CFDI) module. “CFDI is a tool that uses digital technology to help you manage sclerotinia risk and help you decide if, when and where to apply fungicide to your crop so you can protect yield potential and maximize ROI.” Bruce says the CFDI module answers three valuable questions that stand between you and a great crop. Let’s take a closer look at how FieldView and CFDI can reliably provide the answers you need.
Should I spray?
That’s the question canola growers face annually, even in a dry year. FieldView delivers the answer, based on your cropping history, the maturity of the canola variety and recent weather events such as rainfall or high humidity. With this information, the program provides a sclerotinia risk assessment of low, medium, or high.
When should I spray?
This determination is based on the maturity of the crop and seeding date. The CFDI will tell you when your crop is expected to be at 30% bloom. Sure, you can scout your fields to assess bloom stage or check the weather. But you may not have time, or your canola fields may be too far away from your home base. Says Bruce: “Percent bloom always involves a bit of guesswork. Two growers standing at opposite corners of a field may come up with a different number on bloom percentage.” CFDI takes the guesswork out of this all-important decision – all from your smartphone.
Where should I spray?
The prescription within the CFDI module in FieldView provides an on/off recommendation. “It’s always best to spray at full rate or not at all,” Bruce advises. The latest innovation in CFDI enables you to spray 100% or less of your affected field, based on factors like topography or even the canola commodity price. “CFDI takes into account the variability of the land you farm,” he adds, “so you don’t spray where it won’t make a difference.”
