Why It Matters

Accurate, tech‑driven biodiversity monitoring turns sustainability into a quantifiable profit driver, accelerating regenerative agriculture adoption.

Key Takeaways

  • Farmers need tech to quantify pond biodiversity efficiently.
  • Manual pond sampling is labor‑intensive and often inaccurate.
  • April 28 event will showcase nature‑tech solutions for profit.
  • Key speakers include Environment Agency adviser and major growers.
  • Financial models from insurers and consultants will address ROI.

Summary

The video previews a hands‑on pond‑dipping demonstration and promotes an upcoming conference on April 28 at Rothamsted titled “Productive Landscape: Nature‑Tech for Planet and Profit.” It underscores how farmers are now incentivised to adopt practices that boost biodiversity, soil health, and water quality, yet traditional monitoring methods remain cumbersome.

Presenters highlight the difficulty of manually counting pond organisms with a simple 10× hand lens, noting that such approaches are labor‑intensive and prone to error. They point to emerging digital tools—bird‑song identification apps, soil‑carbon sensors, and other biodiversity platforms—that can automate data collection and provide quantitative insights for land‑management decisions.

The event will feature a keynote from the Environment Agency’s chief scientific adviser, a session chaired by Tim Place of Place UK, and panels with the National Farmers’ Union, Leaf, major estates such as the Lachley and Crown Estates, and corporate players like G’s Fresh and British Sugar. Financial experts from Lloyd’s, Brown & Co, and Cambridge Consultants will discuss ROI models and investment pathways for regenerative agriculture.

By bridging ecological monitoring with scalable technology and clear financial frameworks, the conference aims to equip farmers and landowners with actionable metrics that translate environmental stewardship into measurable profit, accelerating the adoption of nature‑positive practices across the sector.

Original Description

Ending our week at @Agri-TechE with a spot of pond-dipping – and reflecting on why we need technology to monitor and manage Nature at scale.
Measuring pollination, soil health, water quality, species diversity…..and how to make the return on investment, we’ll be discussing all this and more at our event on 28th April hosted by Rothamsted.
No wellies or test tubes needed – and certainly no magnifying lenses, but we will be hearing from major UK farming businesses and landowners as to how they are tackling this. Also processors, supply chain partners and networks, as well as a technology exhibition, and meet our sponsors, @rskadas @FenlandSOIL and @rothamstedenterprises7195.
Also next week – come and learn about the secret sauce for #agritech and how to protect it with IP21, the next in our micro-learning series over the summer where we’ll be from the legal experts in our network about how the legal world is changing for agriculture with the advent of technology.
