The contract modernises sustainment of a legacy engine, increasing training aircraft availability and showcasing AI‑driven logistics for defense procurement.
GE Aerospace has landed its inaugural TrueChoice Defense contract, a digitally enabled agreement that applies artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to the venerable J85 turbojet engine. The J85 powers the U.S. Air Force’s T‑38 Talon, the service’s primary trainer, and will remain in service through at least 2040. By consolidating data from the Air Force, the Defense Logistics Agency and GE’s own systems, the new platform promises real‑time visibility into engine health and parts inventories, marking a shift from reactive maintenance to predictive sustainment.
The seven‑month initial term, with an optional four‑year, five‑month extension, gives the Defense Logistics Agency a testbed for AI‑driven supply‑chain optimisation. GE will deliver fleet‑management and supply‑optimisation services that forecast part demand, flag bottlenecks and streamline ordering processes. A partnership with Palantir adds robust data‑integration capabilities, merging aerospace engineering expertise with enterprise‑level analytics. Early trials that aggregated over 6,000 J85 components demonstrated measurable reductions in lead times and higher part availability, directly translating into increased aircraft readiness for pilot training missions.
The contract underscores a broader trend of digitising defence logistics, where AI and data analytics become core enablers of operational efficiency. As the J85 engine approaches its sixth decade of service, extending its lifespan through smarter sustainment reduces the need for costly platform replacements. For GE Aerospace, the deal not only secures recurring revenue but also validates its TrueChoice platform for future programmes across fighter, transport and unmanned aircraft fleets. Industry observers see this as a bellwether for how legacy systems can be modernised without sacrificing performance or safety.
