AquaScale provides market‑ready Irish aquatech firms with equity‑free, strategic support, accelerating their global expansion and strengthening Ireland’s position as a leading aquaculture hub.
Ireland’s aquaculture sector is rapidly evolving from a niche industry into a high‑growth technology cluster. With 76 companies delivering an estimated €165 million in annual value and supporting more than 900 full‑time jobs, the ecosystem benefits from strong public‑private collaboration, research institutions, and a supportive regulatory environment. Bord Iascaigh Mhara, the national seafood development agency, has been instrumental in nurturing early‑stage ventures through its Aquatech Innovation Studio, which has already facilitated €28 million of private investment for 66 start‑ups.
AquaScale, the 2026 iteration of BIM’s studio, marks a strategic shift toward scale‑stage companies that already have customers, pilots, or revenue streams. Unlike traditional accelerators that focus on pitching, AquaScale offers an equity‑free, fee‑free intensive that hones strategic clarity, market positioning, and execution readiness. The eight‑to‑ten‑company cohort will engage in peer‑level discussions, rigorous commercial pressure‑testing, and mentorship from Hatch Blue, a global aquaculture accelerator. This market‑first approach is designed to reduce entry risk, accelerate commercial traction, and prepare Irish firms for rapid international expansion.
The programme’s timing aligns with soaring global demand for sustainable seafood, especially in high‑value segments such as salmon and shrimp. Backed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (2021‑2027), AquaScale reinforces Ireland’s ambition to become a launchpad for globally competitive aquaculture scale‑ups. By equipping companies with the tools to navigate new markets, the initiative not only boosts export potential but also strengthens the country’s scientific and economic contribution to the global aquaculture value chain. The success of AquaScale could set a benchmark for other regions seeking to transition from innovation hubs to export‑driven industry leaders.
