The closure underscores the financial and market hurdles new studios face, even with seasoned talent, and signals caution for narrative‑driven simulation projects.
The indie game landscape has seen a surge of studios founded by industry veterans seeking creative freedom. Midsummer Studios entered the market with a résumé that included titles like Civilization and XCOM, attracting both investors and early hype. However, launching a new studio still requires substantial capital, robust publishing partnerships, and a clear path to monetization—elements that can be elusive even for seasoned developers.
Burbank, the studio's sole project, aimed to merge sandbox life simulation with a meta‑narrative reminiscent of The Truman Show. This hybrid concept tapped into a growing appetite for player‑driven storytelling and emergent gameplay, trends evident in recent successes such as The Witcher 3’s narrative depth and Animal Crossing’s social simulation. Yet, delivering a polished experience in this niche demands extensive iteration, user testing, and marketing spend, all of which can strain a fledgling studio’s resources.
The abrupt shutdown highlights the volatility of the mid‑tier development segment. While veteran leadership can attract attention, it does not guarantee financial sustainability or market traction. For investors and aspiring developers, Midsummer’s story serves as a cautionary tale: thorough market validation, diversified revenue strategies, and realistic timelines are essential when pursuing ambitious, narrative‑heavy games. The industry will likely watch closely for how other studios balance creative ambition with pragmatic business models moving forward.

Midsummer Studios, which was established in May 2024 by a team of veteran developers behind games such as Sid Meier’s Civilization, XCOM, and The Sims, will shut down, co‑founder and creative director Jake Solomon announced.
“We built a studio, we made a game, and I’m really proud of both,” Solomon said. “Before we close the doors at Midsummer Studios I’d like to share a glimpse of Burbank, the game we poured our hearts into.”
Burbank, the studio’s game that was in development, is described as “like ‘Life Sims + The Truman Show,’” but “more than that.”
Solomon explained, “I believe people are storytellers, and I want them to share whatever stories and characters they can dream up. Burbank lets you do that. We have moments playing this game where characters come alive in a way we’ve never experienced. And for an old game developer like me that’s special.”
