The title signals Konami’s re‑entry into the JRPG space, potentially strengthening Sony’s exclusive lineup and reviving interest in narrative‑driven console RPGs. Its success could influence future investments in original Japanese RPGs on next‑gen hardware.
Konami’s reveal of *Rev.Noir* comes at a pivotal moment for the Japanese role‑playing genre, which has struggled to maintain a strong presence on modern consoles. After a series of remasters and licensed titles, the company’s decision to invest in a brand‑new IP suggests confidence in the market’s appetite for story‑heavy experiences. The announcement aligns with Sony’s broader strategy to secure exclusive, narrative‑driven games that differentiate the PlayStation 5 from competing platforms, reinforcing the console’s reputation as a hub for high‑production‑value RPGs.
The teaser trailer sets a tone of urgency and mystery, centering on a cataclysmic event dubbed "lightfall" that threatens the world’s fabric. By showing Asch’s allies falling victim to this phenomenon and then rewinding time, the narrative hints at mechanics that could blend traditional turn‑based combat with time‑manipulation puzzles—a design space gaining traction after titles like *Chrono Trigger* and *The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask* demonstrated its appeal. While the battle system remains undisclosed, speculation ranges from classic turn‑based encounters to more dynamic, action‑oriented combat, each offering distinct pathways to engage both veteran JRPG fans and newcomers.
From a business perspective, *Rev.Noir* being a PS5‑only title could boost platform loyalty, especially if Konami leverages the console’s hardware capabilities for richer visuals and faster load times. The exclusivity may also encourage cross‑promotional opportunities within Sony’s ecosystem, such as PlayStation Plus incentives or integration with the upcoming PlayStation Store storefront enhancements. As the market watches, the game's performance will likely inform whether other Japanese publishers revive original JRPG projects, potentially reshaping the genre’s future on next‑generation hardware.
Konami announced a new JRPG at Sony’s February 2026 State of Play, and it will be called Rev.Noir. Only an initial trailer appeared, confirming it is in development and setting the story. It is only confirmed for the PS5 at the moment. The initial trailer and gameplay footage also suggested this may be a situation where one of the protagonists turned back time to save the others.
In Rev.Noir, a phenomenon called lightfall affects the world, and our goal in the JRPG seems to be to mitigate or end it. Things start with us seeing its damage in action, with the lead character Asch’s allies hurt and killed and places damaged because of the light. The message, “I refuse to accept an ending like this” then appears. Everything then rewinds, and we see Asch just starting his journey with a young woman. We then see a number of allies and enemies. Things close out with the note, “when hope sparks catastrophe.” The video doesn’t indicate if it will be a turn-based or active battle system.
