By combining SaaS-aware backups, improved diagnostics, and seamless local/mobile access within the UniFi management stack, Ubiquiti is positioning UNAS as a direct challenger to Synology’s NAS dominance—potentially shifting SMB and prosumer demand toward UniFi. This could force incumbents to accelerate feature parity or rethink integration and pricing strategies.
Ubiquiti has released UniFi Drive 4.0 (currently in staged release candidate) for its UNAS lineup, adding native iPhone photo backup, richer drive analytics and integrated logging, and one-click SMB access via Identity Endpoint including mobile access. The headline feature is tailored Microsoft 365 backup support—bringing app-aware backups, snapshots, encrypted storage and browser or local access to UNAS devices. The update centralizes storage alerts and administration into the UniFi ecosystem, simplifying file access and backups for home and business users. Collectively these features close functional gaps that previously separated UniFi NAS from incumbent vendors.
