Observer status gives the mining sector a direct voice in shaping global environmental policy, accelerating responsible mining practices worldwide.
The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) is the premier global forum where 193 member states set the environmental agenda. IRMA’s accreditation as an observer in late 2025 is a strategic milestone, allowing the mining assurance community to engage directly with high‑level policymakers. This access not only raises the profile of responsible mining standards but also ensures that sector‑specific insights inform broader sustainability discussions, bridging the gap between industry practices and international environmental objectives.
During UNEA‑7 in Nairobi, IRMA’s Law & Policy Director, Kristi Disney Bruckner, participated in multiple plenary sessions, leadership dialogues, and side events, including the launch of the UN Task Force on Critical Energy Transition Minerals. A key outcome was the adoption of a resolution strengthening cooperation on the environmentally sound management of minerals and metals. IRMA contributed best‑practice guidance from its standards, advocated for circular approaches to mining waste, and pledged content for UNEP’s Digital Knowledge Hub, reinforcing the global push toward transparent, low‑impact mineral value chains.
Looking ahead, IRMA’s observer role positions it to influence the implementation track of UNEA‑7 resolutions and to shape the agenda for UNEA‑8 in 2027. By feeding real‑world data into UN deliberations and supporting capacity‑building in developing economies, IRMA helps align industry operations with emerging regulatory expectations. This proactive engagement is likely to drive wider adoption of responsible mining certifications, attract ESG‑focused investment, and accelerate the transition to sustainable mineral supply chains worldwide.
