Why It Matters

Prioritizing dynamic contrast creates memorable listening experiences, giving the band a competitive edge and guiding future production strategies.

Key Takeaways

  • Friko emphasizes patience, delaying drums for maximum impact.
  • Dynamics are integral, stemming from natural play style and songwriting.
  • "Guess" showcases quiet buildup before a powerful rhythmic entrance.
  • Live testing on tour refined the song’s dynamic structure.
  • Band aims to accentuate Niko’s inherently dynamic compositions.

Summary

Friko discusses the band’s deliberate use of dynamics, notably delaying the drums in "Guess" until about two‑and‑a‑half minutes to maximize impact.

They view dynamics as a natural extension of their playing style and Niko’s songwriting, which already embeds contrast; the band’s job is to accentuate those shifts.

A pivotal moment occurred at Electric Fetus when Niko first performed "Guess"; the drummer felt emotional, imagined a simple, quick impact, and the band trialed the arrangement on tour, initially entering too early before refining it.

This focus on dynamic arrangement shapes the album’s broader theme, illustrating how live experimentation informs studio decisions and enhances the tension‑release appeal that can set the band apart commercially.

During the interview, Zach notes the band lean into dynamics in their song arrangements. Friko drummer Bailey Minzenberger talks about the band's fondness for the quiet and loud moments in music. "Leaning into dynamics is something that we've always really loved," Minzenberger says. "And I think to an extent comes kind of naturally because it's the way that we play."
