Why It Matters

Skills let organizations scale domain expertise across projects and agents without overwhelming context limits, making Claude more practical for real-world workflows by linking data access (via MCP) with reusable operational knowledge. This reduces manual setup, improves consistency, and accelerates adoption of AI-assisted engineering and review processes.

Summary

Anthropic’s Claude “skills” are portable, reusable expertise packages that teach the model specialized domain knowledge and can be invoked automatically when relevant. At startup Claude loads only each skill’s name and description to save tokens; when a prompt matches, the full skill.md and any referenced files are progressively loaded to avoid bloating the context window. Skills complement project-specific CloudMD files, MCP servers that connect external data sources, and role-focused sub-agents, enabling any agent to reuse the same conventions or procedures. Typical uses include onboarding to coding standards, enforcing PR security checks, and standardizing team data analysis workflows.

Original Description

Agent Skills are organized folders that package expertise that Claude can automatically invoke when relevant to the task at hand.
