Why It Matters

Fable 5 gives enterprises a leading‑edge LLM for complex tasks, but its higher cost and upcoming usage‑only pricing reshape AI budgeting and risk management strategies.

Key Takeaways

  • Claude launches Fable 5 and Mythos 5, new top-tier AI models.
  • Fable 5 is publicly available; Mythos 5 remains limited to partners.
  • Fable 5 outperforms Opus 4.8 and rivals Gemini, ChatGPT across tasks.
  • Pricing doubles Opus rates; subscription will shift to usage‑only June 22.
  • Safeguards limit Mythos 5 due to potential misuse in cyber‑security.

Summary

Claude unveiled two new models—Fable 5, now accessible via the Claude app and API, and Mythos 5, a restricted version with lifted cyber safeguards for select partners. The rollout adds a fourth tier to Anthropic’s lineup, sitting above Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus 4.8, and is positioned as the most capable LLM currently available.

Benchmark data referenced in the video shows Fable 5 surpassing Opus 4.8 and outperforming competing models from Gemini and OpenAI across software engineering, knowledge work, and long‑running autonomous tasks. Users can select reasoning effort levels (high, extra, max), with higher settings boosting accuracy at the cost of token usage. Pricing is roughly double Opus—$10 per million input and $50 per million output tokens—and will transition to a pure usage model on June 22.

The presenter highlights practical demos: a slideshow created in Claude Design, interactive simulations, and rapid revisions of visual assets, all showing marked quality gains over Opus. However, occasional policy blocks forced the system to fall back to Opus, and the model’s aggressive safeguards sometimes limit creative freedom. Mythos 5 remains behind a partner‑only wall due to concerns about enabling malicious cyber or bio‑research activities.

For businesses, Fable 5 offers a performance leap for AI‑driven development and content generation, but cost and usage‑based billing demand careful budgeting. Anthropic’s tiered safety approach signals a broader industry trend of balancing power with responsible AI deployment.

I test Claude Fable 5 to see if it is really better than Opus 4.8 and worth the higher cost.
Here is the official Claude Mythos 5 / Fable 5 post: https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-fable-5-mythos-5
Claude just released two new models: Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5. I walk through what makes them different, who can use each one, and why Mythos 5 is still locked down.
I also test Claude Fable 5 inside Claude and Claude Design. I use it for slides, coding demos, interactive projects, and prompt tests so you can see how it performs in real use.
I compare Claude Fable 5 with Opus 4.8 on a Sim City style game, an AI history timeline, a solar system demo, and an ecosystem simulator. Some results are much better with Fable 5. Some are closer than I expected.
I also cover Claude Fable 5 pricing, usage limits, reasoning effort, safety limits, and what happens when Claude switches back to Opus 4.8.
This is my first look at Claude Fable 5, and I’ll keep testing it more with Claude Code, Claude Design, and bigger AI coding tasks.
