Why AI Makes Things Up

Original Description
Day 19/42: What Is Grounding?
Yesterday, we controlled randomness.
Today, we control truth.
Grounding means forcing a model to rely on real, external information.
Without grounding, models guess.
Confidently.
Grounding tells the model:
“Only answer using this source.”
If the info isn’t there, the best answer is “I don’t know.”
This is one of the most important tools for reducing hallucinations.
Missed Day 18? Start there.
Tomorrow, we see how grounding is built in practice: RAG.
I’m Louis-François, PhD dropout, now CTO & co-founder at Towards AI. Follow me for tomorrow’s no-BS AI roundup 🚀
