About HDBI

HDBI (Human Development Biology Initiative) is a Wellcome-funded, multi-institutional research consortium focused on understanding human development before birth. Over five years, it brings together groups from the UK and Europe to study how fertilised eggs give rise to the diverse cell types that form organs and tissues, including early embryos, the heart and lungs, the nervous system, and blood and immune systems. The project aims to advance foundational knowledge of human development and its deviations that lead to miscarriages and congenital abnormalities. It emphasizes public engagement and ethical considerations in tissue use and research governance.
