A meta‑analysis of 39 studies covering 11,819 entrepreneurs finds founders score higher on narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy than bankers or the general workforce. These Dark Triad traits modestly increase the likelihood of starting a business (narcissism 0.24, Machiavellianism 0.16, psychopathy 0.17). However, the same traits are linked to poorer venture performance, with Machiavellianism showing the strongest negative correlation (‑0.22). Narcissistic founders attract more venture capital, but their companies experience greater performance swings and higher team instability.
