The contract strengthens Europe’s subsea technology supply chain and expands DOF’s deep‑water capabilities, positioning both firms for growth in offshore energy markets.
The offshore subsea sector is witnessing a surge in demand for high‑performance remotely operated vehicles as oil, gas and renewable projects push into deeper waters. DOF Group, one of the world’s largest vessel owners, has reinforced its fleet by ordering four next‑generation work‑class ROVs from Forum Energy Technologies, a UK‑based manufacturer. This move not only secures access to cutting‑edge hardware but also supports the European supply chain at a time when geopolitical pressures are reshaping equipment sourcing strategies.
The XLX EVO III units are rated to 3,000 metres and can carry more than 500 kilograms of payload, thanks to 420 mm thrusters and an upgraded buoyancy package. Integrated with FET’s ICE Unity control software, they offer operators enhanced maneuverability and real‑time data analytics, critical for complex tasks such as subsea inspections, cable installations and intervention on offshore wind foundations. Deploying the first two ROVs in Singapore positions DOF to service high‑growth markets across Asia‑Pacific while maintaining a global operational footprint.
Beyond the technical advantages, the order underscores a decade‑long partnership that has seen DOF acquire over 60 ROVs from FET since 2008. By sourcing the machines from the Kirkbymoorside facility, DOF benefits from shorter lead times and localized support, reducing downtime during critical projects. The contract signals confidence in next‑generation subsea robotics and hints at broader adoption of advanced ROVs as the industry transitions toward greener energy infrastructure and more demanding deepwater missions.
