Why It Matters

Ensuring grid reliability before summer reduces outage risk, protecting consumer confidence and economic activity in the region.

Key Takeaways

  • •Maintenance covers 107 substations, 1,379 transformers, 353 lines.
  • •Campaign runs Feb 15–Mar 14 to avert summer outages.
  • •123 power transformers and 246 VCBs slated for checks.
  • •Tree pruning and insulator replacement included.
  • •Area officers held accountable for post‑maintenance failures.

Pulse Analysis

The proactive maintenance drive in Banda reflects a broader trend among Indian utilities to pre‑empt seasonal load spikes. By targeting over a thousand distribution assets within a tight 30‑day window, the department aims to mitigate the common summer challenge of transformer overloads and line faults that can cascade into widespread blackouts. This systematic approach not only improves operational resilience but also aligns with national grid reliability standards, positioning Banda as a model for regional power management.

Beyond the hardware upgrades, the campaign emphasizes vegetation management and equipment hygiene—critical factors often overlooked in routine schedules. Pruning trees near overhead lines reduces fault incidence caused by falling branches, while replacing damaged insulators and topping up transformer oil addresses aging infrastructure vulnerabilities. These measures collectively enhance fault tolerance, ensuring that supply interruptions remain minimal even as demand surges during heatwaves.

Accountability mechanisms further strengthen the initiative’s impact. By holding area officers responsible for any post‑maintenance disruptions, the department incentivizes thorough workmanship and swift issue resolution. This governance layer, coupled with transparent reporting, builds stakeholder trust and supports the region’s economic stability, as reliable electricity is essential for both residential comfort and industrial productivity during the high‑consumption summer months.

The Banda electricity department has started a month‑long maintenance campaign. This initiative aims to prevent power disruptions during the upcoming summer season.

In view of the summer season ahead, the electricity department in Banda has launched on a proactive basis a maintenance campaign month starting from Feb 15 to Mar 14.

Sharing details, chief engineer (Distribution) of Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitaratan Nigam Ltd, Banda, Arvind Nayak said that the campaign is aimed to ensure an uninterrupted and continuous power supply to consumers during the upcoming summer season.

The official said that under the campaign, 107 electrical substations, 1,379 distribution transformers, and 353 lines have been identified for maintenance and repair work across all four distribution divisions in the Banda region. Additionally, 123 power transformers, 246 11‑kV VCBs, and 343 0.4‑kV lines, along with 139 protection‑related works, have also been marked for checking.

“The selected works are scheduled to be carried out during the maintenance month to prevent disruption to electricity supply due to transformer and line breakdowns during the upcoming summer season. After completion of the work, if any transformer gets damaged or the supply of any line is disrupted, responsibility would be fixed on the concerned area officer,” Nayak said.

During the maintenance month, pruning and cleaning of tree branches near the lines will be carried out, along with replacement of damaged insulators and replenishment of oil shortages in transformers.
