The upgrade showcases Switch 2’s hardware leap, boosting indie titles’ visual fidelity and expanding Nintendo’s game library.
The Nintendo Switch 2 arrives with a markedly stronger GPU and higher‑bandwidth memory, allowing developers to push visual quality beyond the limits of the original console. For indie studios like Unknown Worlds Entertainment, this hardware leap translates into tangible upgrades without the need for a complete remake. By supporting native 1440p output when docked and 1080p in handheld mode, the platform delivers crisp textures and richer lighting while preserving the portable convenience that defines the Switch brand. This move signals Nintendo’s commitment to extending the lifecycle of its ecosystem through meaningful hardware enhancements.
Subnautica and its expansion Below Zero have long been praised for immersive underwater exploration and emergent storytelling. The Switch 2 ports retain the games’ core mechanics but benefit from a stable 60 frames‑per‑second frame rate, eliminating the occasional dips that plagued the 2020 releases. Enhanced Joy‑Con 2 mapping offers finer control, crucial for navigating complex marine environments. Higher resolution textures and improved draw distances deepen the sense of wonder, allowing both newcomers and veteran players to rediscover alien oceans with greater clarity. The technical polish aligns the titles with their PC and console counterparts.
From a business perspective, bringing established titles to the Switch 2 expands Nintendo’s library without the risk of new IP development. The ports attract a ready‑made fan base, driving early sales and reinforcing the console’s value proposition for handheld gamers seeking premium experiences. Moreover, the announcement underscores a broader industry trend: leveraging next‑gen handheld hardware to revitalize popular games, extending revenue streams, and strengthening community engagement. As the Switch 2 gains traction, similar upgrades for other indie successes are likely, positioning the platform as a hub for high‑quality, portable gaming.
Unknown Worlds Entertainment has announced Switch 2 ports for both Subnautica and its standalone expansion Subnautica: Below Zero.
Both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero are coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this month, on February 17. Both games were ported to Switch 1 back in 2020.
As expected with new hardware, both games received graphical improvements, running at 1440p resolution when docked and 1080p in handheld mode. Both modes support a smooth 60 frames per second. The Nintendo Switch 2 versions also have optimized controls for Joy‑Con 2, enabling more precise movement.
“What has always made Subnautica special is the community around it, from the stories players share to the discoveries they make and the sense of wonder that comes from exploring an unknown world together,” said Michael Verrette, Producer at Unknown Worlds in a press release. “Bringing Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero to Nintendo Switch 2 is about welcoming new players into that community, while giving longtime fans a chance to experience these worlds again in a way that feels fresh, smooth, and more immersive.”
