The surge underscores Brisbane Airport’s growing reliance on the Chinese market, driving higher tourism spend and reinforcing Southeast Queensland’s economic outlook.
Lunar New Year remains Asia’s most intense travel window, and Brisbane Airport is capitalising on that momentum. By expanding seat inventory across Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Taipei, the airport has lifted overall capacity by 17.4% compared with last year. Airlines such as China Southern, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air and China Eastern have collectively added thousands of seats, positioning Brisbane as a preferred gateway for Chinese outbound and inbound traffic during the festive period.
The operational boost translates into tangible economic benefits for the broader region. Chinese visitors now represent the airport’s second‑largest international market and rank among the highest spenders, fueling demand for hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues across South East Queensland. Coupled with a A$5 billion Future BNE precinct upgrade slated over the next five years, the airport is laying infrastructure groundwork to sustain and accelerate this growth trajectory, targeting more than 25 million passengers annually.
Beyond flights, Brisbane Airport is enhancing the traveler experience through digital and cultural initiatives. The launch of a dedicated WeChat Mini Program streamlines pre‑flight, in‑terminal and post‑arrival services for Chinese passengers, reflecting a broader industry shift toward platform‑specific engagement. Simultaneously, on‑site zodiac exhibitions, lion dances and interactive lucky‑lever games celebrate the Year of the Horse, reinforcing the airport’s brand as a culturally attuned hub. These combined efforts position Brisbane to capture a larger share of Asia‑Pacific air traffic in the years ahead.
