Investing in education strengthens the 15.7 million‑strong restaurant workforce and ensures a pipeline of skilled leaders for a sector facing labor shortages and evolving consumer expectations.
The restaurant and hospitality sector remains one of the largest employers in the United States, supporting more than 15 million workers across kitchens, front‑of‑house, supply chains and corporate offices. Yet the industry continues to grapple with talent gaps, rising operational costs, and shifting consumer preferences toward sustainability and technology‑enabled experiences. Higher‑education pathways—such as culinary arts, hospitality management, and food‑service marketing—are increasingly viewed as essential for cultivating the expertise needed to navigate these challenges and drive growth.
The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) is addressing this talent pipeline by allocating nearly $1 million in scholarships for the 2026‑27 academic year. Award amounts between $2,500 and $10,000 can be applied to tuition, books, room and board, or other education‑related expenses. Backed by corporate partners including Burger King, Coca‑Cola, PepsiCo, Crocs and Hormel, the program builds on a 38‑year legacy that has distributed more than $28 million through over 6,300 scholarships. Applications close March 15 on ChooseRestaurants.org.
For prospective students, the scholarships represent a low‑risk entry point into a dynamic career landscape that offers roles from culinary innovation to supply‑chain optimization. Recipients join a growing alumni network that spans 88 schools and 75 fields of study, providing mentorship and industry connections. As the hospitality workforce evolves, financial support for post‑secondary education not only eases student debt but also accelerates the development of leaders capable of advancing operational efficiency, sustainability and guest experience across the sector.
