The upgrade removes a long‑standing bottleneck, delivering a direct airport rail link and boosting capacity across Melbourne’s western suburbs, which supports regional growth and commuter demand.
Melbourne’s long‑awaited airport rail connection finally gained visual momentum with the release of early design concepts. The West Footscray‑to‑Albion corridor, a critical choke point for both metropolitan and regional services, is slated for a A$4.1 billion overhaul that includes six kilometres of elevated track and two new rail bridges. By separating six intersecting lines, the project will free up capacity, enabling higher frequencies on existing routes and paving the way for a dedicated airport line that aligns with the state’s broader rail electrification agenda.
At the heart of the scheme is Sunshine Station, reimagined as a "superhub" that will host additional platforms, an expanded concourse, and seamless links to bus, cycling and pedestrian networks. This transformation not only improves passenger flow but also creates a strategic interchange for regional services heading toward the new airport link. Complementing the hub, a modern Tottenham Station will be constructed with step‑free access and an underpass, minimizing disruption during construction and enhancing accessibility for all users. The track realignment between Sunshine and West Footscray further clears space for future electrified lines to Melton, reinforcing the corridor’s role as a growth engine for western Melbourne.
Beyond transport efficiency, the project carries significant economic implications. The construction phase, expected to start in 2027, will generate thousands of jobs and stimulate local businesses through procurement contracts awarded to firms like McConnell Dowell and Arup. Once operational, the increased train movements—projected at over 1,000 per day—will reduce road congestion, lower emissions, and improve connectivity for the region’s expanding population. Community engagement through the Engage Victoria platform ensures that open spaces and active‑travel links are integrated, delivering a more livable precinct while cementing Melbourne’s position as a forward‑looking, multimodal city.
