Activate What You Learn: Closing the Gap Between Learning and Doing
Why It Matters
Integrating KM with learning turns training into measurable business value by minimizing knowledge loss, speeding proficiency and boosting productivity—imperative amid widespread retirements, reskilling needs and competitive pressure. Effective use of AI can scale access, but human oversight is necessary to preserve accuracy and context.
Summary
APQC hosted a webinar led by Melissa Tucker and Linda Bratzik on closing the gap between learning and doing by aligning knowledge management (KM) with learning and development. They argued that KM ensures expertise, lessons learned and proven practices are findable and usable at the moment of need, while L&D builds capability—together reducing time to competency and improving performance. APQC research highlighted urgency: roughly 51% of organizations expect large workforce departures in five years and employees spend only about 65% of time on productive work due to search, relearning and lost knowledge. The session also explored AI’s role in scaling access to knowledge while stressing the need for human expertise to keep AI-driven resources accurate, contextual and trustworthy, and closed with practical steps organizations can take.
