University of Oulu Hosted Latvian Defence and Technology Delegation
A delegation of Latvian technology and defence companies visited the University of Oulu on 16 April 2026 to discuss joint research. Hosted by 6G Flagship’s Hannu Nikurautio and programme manager Esa Posio, the group toured the NATO DIANA 6G Test Centre and Oulu’s broader research facilities. Talks centered on cooperation in 6G connectivity, artificial intelligence and defence applications, with follow‑up meetings led by LMT Innovations and Latvijas Mobilais Telefons. The visit aligns with Latvia’s rapidly expanding defence budget, which is expected to rise to about $2.9 billion by 2030.
When the Information Environment Becomes the Attack Surface
The Oulu City Library hosted Faktabaari’s Fact Tour, bringing together fact‑checkers, cybersecurity experts and officials to discuss the merging of information operations and cyber threats. Speakers highlighted how the same digital techniques—bot networks, AI‑generated deepfakes, and phishing—are used by both...
GenAI Is the Greatest Magic Trick Ever Performed
The article likening generative AI to a magic trick argues that its impressive outputs mask a purely statistical mechanism rather than genuine understanding. It warns that hype encourages organizations to treat AI as a sentient breakthrough, overlooking inherent failure modes...
Beamforming for Networks that Sense and Communicate at Once
Researchers propose a hybrid beamforming scheme that lets a single high‑frequency transmission carry both data and environmental sensing information, addressing the dual‑purpose demand of emerging 6G networks. Traditional beamformers become computationally prohibitive when scaling to massive antenna arrays, making real‑time...
Finland Leverages 6G Prowess as National Defence Network Goes Nationwide
The episode explores Finland’s rollout of the DEFINE Network, a nationwide defense innovation framework that links civilian 6G research with military applications. Central to this effort is the University of Oulu’s 6G Test Center, which provides rare radio‑frequency testing facilities...
Twelve Papers Accepted Across ICASSP and ICC Highlight Momentum in Wireless Research
The episode highlights twelve papers from the University of Ulu’s Center for Wireless Communications accepted at IEEE’s ICASSP and ICC conferences, showcasing the convergence of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) with learning-driven methods. Guests Nan Nguyen and Marku Yunti explain...
