All Aboard at Watson Station: Reliving Iowa’s Railroad Past | Iowa Life
Watson Station, nestled in Missouri Valley City Park, is a replica train depot named after Johnny Watson, the mid‑1960s steam‑train operator who loved children. The site offers a short, family‑friendly ride on the “Jimmy King Express,” turning a modest park attraction into a living tribute to Iowa’s railroad past.
Engineer Farley pilots a 750 cc Kawasaki engine delivering 26 horsepower, pulling three vintage‑style cars at no more than five miles per hour. Riders travel through the iconic Hoover Tunnel and over a small bridge, where Farley cues children to shout “woo‑hoo,” creating a playful, immersive experience.
The volunteer‑run operation draws a wide demographic—from toddlers to a 98‑year‑old passenger—highlighting its intergenerational appeal. Farley’s enthusiasm is evident when he says, “I love kids, and I’d even pay them to work here if I could,” underscoring the community spirit that sustains the attraction.
By reviving a piece of Iowa’s rail heritage, Watson Station provides educational value, boosts local tourism, and strengthens community bonds. Its annual schedule ensures that new generations experience a tangible slice of history, keeping the legacy of regional railroads alive.
