Lords Committee Warns of Need to Fortify UK Fiscal Rules
Britain’s House of Lords Finance Committee has issued a stark warning that the nation’s fiscal rules are insufficient to curb rising debt and budget volatility. The report notes that UK debt‑to‑GDP has topped 100% and the existing framework lacks binding spending limits or multi‑year targets. It calls for stronger, enforceable fiscal frameworks, including statutory debt ceilings, an independent fiscal council and longer‑term budgeting. The recommendations aim to restore credibility with investors and bring the UK in line with international best practice.
