Summary

In a recent retreat, the speaker describes a guided visualization led by mindset coach Patrick, where participants converse with a younger version of themselves, prompting a deep personal revelation.

The exercise uncovered that the speaker had been denying a core need: to forgive himself. Saying “You can forgive yourself” triggered a powerful emotional wave, highlighting self‑criticism as a hidden burden and framing forgiveness as a skill to be practiced.

The newfound self‑compassion produced an immediate sense of lightness, allowing the speaker to lead an unconventional “Simon Says” yoga session infused with fun—a stark contrast to his usual demeanor. He notes that granting himself grace transformed his energy and outlook.

This experience underscores how structured self‑dialogue can unlock emotional release, improve well‑being, and enhance leadership presence. Organizations that embed such reflective practices may foster more resilient, creative teams.

Original Description

Forgiving yourself might be the skill you didn’t realize you needed.
Last week at Be The Better You retreat, we did an exercise where we talked to our younger selves.
I started with the usual stuff:
“You’re doing your best.”
“You’ve made progress.”
But none of that really hit me.
Then I said: “You can forgive yourself.”
And that’s when it landed. Hard.
I realized I’ve been carrying around expectations for years,
things I thought I should have done better, faster, differently.
And instead of understanding what I was going through back then…
I was judging it.
So this past week, I’ve been practicing forgiveness.
Not perfection. Not pretending.
Just giving myself a little more grace than I’m used to.
It’s uncomfortable.
It feels like learning a brand-new skill.
But here’s the surprising part:
As soon as I started forgiving myself, I felt lighter.
More relaxed.
More playful.
I even led a goofy Simon Says style yoga session right after and had a blast.
That’s not normally my style.
My big takeaway:
Forgiving myself didn’t make me weaker.
It made things fun again.
If you’ve been carrying around pressure, guilt, or frustration,
this might be the thing to try next.
Start small.
Give yourself understanding.
Practice a little grace.
And see what changes.
Have you ever struggled to forgive yourself?
