Why It Matters

The collection represents a significant private cultural legacy and market benchmark—its museum‑caliber holdings and distinguished provenance increase its institutional and commercial value, and its stylistic vision influences how early 20th‑century collecting is understood and shown.

Summary

The Ortis Patiño (Graziella Patiño de Ortiz Linares) collection traces its origins to 1927 in Paris, when Simon Patiño gifted his daughter Graziella an hôtel particulier that became a decades‑long cabinet of perfection. Over 40 years the family assembled paintings and high-quality furniture by leading artists and makers, positioning the collection alongside great European collectors such as the Rothschilds. The couple cultivated a refined, quasi‑baroque taste tied to the early 20th‑century “coffee society” movement that blended erudition with modernity. The collection was curated to resonate with major museums and to present an aesthetic that feels timeless and broadly accessible.

Original Description

In 1920s Paris, at the Hôtel de Blumenthal, Graziella Patiño de Ortiz Linares built a collection shaped by instinct, discernment and exacting standards. Guided by a deep passion for the French 18th century, she created an interior of rare refinement, where paintings by Watteau and Fragonard were in dialogue with exceptional works of art, furniture and finely selected silver.
Christie’s will present the collection through a series of international exhibitions ahead of a landmark sale in Paris.
