MKO, a Romanian photographer, has spent over a decade documenting women the world often overlooks. Her ongoing series, the Atlas of Beauty, seeks to celebrate true beauty in all its forms—size, color, lifestyle—by photographing subjects from diverse cultural backgrounds.
The project deliberately mixes conventionally attractive subjects with those who defy typical beauty norms, such as an Iranian acid‑attack survivor. Since its 2013 launch, the series has amassed hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers and culminated in the 2025 book The Power of Women, underscoring both public interest and commercial viability.
MKO emphasizes minimal post‑production, stating, “I hope my pictures are natural and give the impression of real life,” to preserve authenticity. She also remarks, “I will do this work all my life,” reflecting a personal commitment to elevating unseen stories.
By foregrounding marginalized women, the Atlas of Beauty challenges prevailing beauty standards, offers role models for empowerment, and signals to brands and media that inclusive representation can drive engagement and revenue.
