Scaling AI Requires Workflow Redesign and Leadership Commitment
It’s 2025 and 88% of companies are using AI, but only 1/3 are actually scaling it. McKinsey & Company 's new 2025 State of AI report just dropped, and after THREE YEARS of ChatGPT, companies are still stuck in pilot jail. Here's what's happening: - Company AI use jumped from 78% to 88% year-over-year - 62% are experimenting with AI agents (Allie: feels very high to me) - Companies are using AI in more functions (half using it in 3+ functions) But nearly 2/3 of companies haven't begun scaling AI across the enterprise. According to McKinsey, here’s what companies successfully scaling AI at an enterprise level do differently (plus my POV): 1️⃣ They redesign workflows vs just adding AI on top - 55% of high performers fundamentally redesigned workflows vs only 20% of everyone else (Allie: agree! But most have no idea how to teach this to AI newbies) 2️⃣ Their leaders actually commit - High performers are 3x more likely to have senior leaders who demonstrate real ownership of AI initiatives (Allie: agree! And you need directors and above all bought in, not just SVP and above; strategy fails at the director level) 3️⃣ They're more ambitious - High performers are 3.6x more likely to aim for transformative change vs incremental improvement. They're not asking "how do we do this 10% faster," they're asking "should we even be doing this at all?" (Allie: YES! Productivity is a trap, and I’m increasingly convinced that you can know which type of company you’re at by looking at your CFO’s attitude) If your company is stuck in the pilot phase, something is broken. Find the root cause and shake up who is in the meetings, bring in new external voices, change your incentive structures, and make a new 2026 plan.
