Technically, we have self-sufficiency, but it would be an expensive and lengthy process to re-work our entire distribution & refining system to tap into it. The internal distribution system (shipping, pipelines, etc) would have to be totally rewired to re-route what we export to other parts of the country that would normally import. And refineries would have to be built or retrofit to match the different types of crude they would receive.
As long as Iran still controls the strait of Hormuz, we’re gonna have issues. That’s really the bottom line here. By realizing it can control the strait (at least so far) Iran has gained strategic leverage relative to the outset...
