Glasses that Identify Strangers Threaten Everyday Privacy
The first day I got my Google Glasses home my wife asked me "can it show me anything about the people I'm meeting?" Meta is planning that on its glasses. Are we ready for a world where everyone is known? I am, but I am admittedly in the post privacy world as a public figure (Grok knows me more deeply than I know myself in many ways). Most everyday people haven't thought about how their privacy is going away. What will be your reaction if you walk into a store and the clerk there greets you by name because she has one of these glasses on? Mine will probably be to say hi to her back with her name. What a world we are going into. There's one place that this will be deeply accepted: events. I was at a robotics dinner at Silicon Valley last night. Everyone was adding everyone to LinkedIn and X. There this kind of thing would be very helpful, and very accepted. In a couple of weeks at NVIDIA's GTC I wish I had glasses that did this. But in everyday life? People will freak out for a while, before it just gets accepted if enough people are using them. I can just hear the cries against these coming. A million people freaked out when Zuckerberg first turned on news feeds. Yet we all are using those now.
