The transaction consolidates South Africa's payments landscape, giving Araxi a broader B2B/B2C footprint and positioning it for accelerated growth across the region.
South Africa’s payments sector is entering a phase of rapid consolidation, driven by the need for integrated solutions that span both B2B and B2C channels. Araxi, known for its cloud‑based, AI‑enhanced software suite, has leveraged its strong balance sheet to acquire Pay@, a platform with an extensive retail footprint across six Southern African countries. By bringing Pay@ fully under local ownership, the deal also aligns with regulatory preferences for domestic control of critical financial infrastructure.
Financially, the acquisition is underpinned by robust metrics. Pay@ recorded R271.2 million in revenue and a 30% EBITDA increase, processing more than R60 billion in transaction value over the past year. These figures signal a high‑margin, high‑volume business that complements Araxi’s existing portfolio. The lack of overlapping products means the combined entity can cross‑sell services, accelerate innovation cycles, and capture incremental market share without cannibalising existing revenue streams.
For investors and industry observers, the merger signals a strategic push toward a unified payments ecosystem capable of competing with global fintech entrants. The expanded network of 9,000 retailer locations and 150,000 mobile POS points enhances Araxi’s data assets, fueling AI‑driven analytics and new revenue models. As the company scales its regional presence, it is poised to set new standards for transaction speed, security, and interoperability, reinforcing South Africa’s role as a fintech hub in Africa.
JSE-listed payment solutions provider Araxi announced it will acquire B2B payment solutions company Pay@ in a cash deal worth R1bn. The transaction will be funded with R200 million in cash and R800 million in senior debt, giving Araxi full South African ownership of Pay@ and expanding its payments capabilities.
