China Seeks Stable US Ties Despite War in Iran

Why It Matters

Beijing’s mix of measured outreach to Washington and hardline rhetoric on Taiwan signals it seeks stable economic and strategic ties with the U.S. while maintaining coercive leverage in regional disputes, a stance that will shape global trade, security calculations, and crisis management.

Summary

China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, used a marathon press briefing at the Two Sessions to reiterate calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel‑Iran conflict and to urge major powers to play constructive roles, while taking a veiled swipe at the United States. He described Sino‑US ties as having stabilized after ups and downs, praised high‑level interactions between leaders, and urged preparations to better manage bilateral differences. Despite recent tensions — including the Iran war, the Venezuelan leader’s abduction, and a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on tariffs — Beijing expressed continued commitment to keeping relations with Washington on a steady path. Wang also issued a stark warning on Taiwan, saying those who oppose reunification “will perish.”

Original Description

Despite the conflict in Iran and recent tariff shakeups, China remains committed to keeping relations with Washington on a stable track. #iran #politics #trump #worldnews #israel #usa
China's top diplomat, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, declared that 2026 could be a landmark year for US-China relations if both sides treat each other with sincerity and good faith.
Wang urged a ceasefire in the Middle East conflict and suggested that the hostilities would not affect Chinese leader Xi Jinping's plan to host President Trump when he visits China from March 31 to April 2.
The success of the summit could see a tariff truce extended and stabilize an external environment for trade, but Beijing's tolerance for compromise doesn't extend to its own backyard, including its claim on Taiwan.
