Summary

USC Annenberg’s Unsilencing Boot Camp is a targeted initiative designed to lift underrepresented Latino, Black and immigrant voices into the opinion‑media arena. The program pairs intensive storytelling and reporting workshops with mentorship from established journalists, giving participants the tools to cover their own communities and shape political discourse.

Students repeatedly cite the rarity of spaces where their racial and cultural identities are acknowledged. By teaching practical skills—research, column writing, video commentary—and facilitating networking with peers and industry professionals, the boot camp fills a glaring gap in mainstream media pipelines. The curriculum also emphasizes starting change at the family and local‑community level before scaling to national platforms.

Alumni describe a transformative “spark,” noting that the experience validates their right to speak and equips them to do so confidently. One participant summed it up: “My voice matters, and I can coexist with the policies I write about.” The cohort’s goal is to become future opinion columnists and launch their own media ventures, thereby reshaping the narrative landscape.

If successful, the program promises to diversify newsroom talent, attract new audiences, and challenge entrenched stereotypes that limit advertising and subscription growth. By cultivating a pipeline of authentic public intellectuals, USC Annenberg positions itself as a catalyst for a more inclusive media economy.

Original Description

Who gets to shape the public discourse? Our Unsilencing is a USC Annenberg bootcamp designed to help underrepresented voices break into opinion journalism and public commentary across platforms.
Through intensive coaching, mentorship, and collaborative workshops, participants learn how to develop commentary for print, radio, TV, podcasts, and social media — while building the confidence and skills to shape public discourse on key issues such as health care, immigration, education and the environment.
Participants in the program have gone on to publish commentary and reporting in outlets including TIME, The New Republic, The Sacramento Bee, Teen Vogue and more. Led by Associate Professor Jean Guerrero, the Fall 2025 bootcamp brought in high-profile contributors such as the bestselling authors Reyna Grande and Julissa Arce and the multimedia journalists Janette Villafana and Lupe Llerenas.
This video features interviews with students, collaborators, and organizers about the mission behind Our Unsilencing and why expanding whose voices are heard matters in today’s media landscape.
