Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Boosted AI Inferencing Compared to Amazon EKS
Principled Technologies benchmarked the Llama 3.1‑8B Instruct model on identical eight‑GPU A100 clusters in Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) with the GKE Inference Gateway versus Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) using a standard HTTP load balancer. GKE delivered 15.7% higher token throughput, 92.8% lower time‑to‑first‑token, and 62.6% lower inter‑token latency. Tail‑latency improvements reached up to 83.9% reduction, and the gains are attributed to inference‑aware routing and prefix‑cache optimizations. The results suggest GKE can provide higher capacity or lower hardware spend for generative‑AI workloads such as multi‑turn chat and retrieval‑augmented generation.
