In The Studio With Sculptor Conrad Shawcross
Conrad Shawcross has turned a derelict Hackney factory into a combined home and expansive studio, enabling him to produce his largest works yet. The newly built "rope machine" – The Nervous System (Umbilical) – is a kinetic sculpture of dyed wool ropes that mimics the sun’s journey through the solar system. Originally shown at Here East in London’s Olympic Park, the piece is now headed to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania. Shawcross’s growing scale and technical ambition reinforce his status as a leading contemporary sculptor.
