How Cleaner Salt Production in Tanga Is Improving Nutrition Outcomes
Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) has upgraded salt‑production facilities in Tanga, Tanzania, installing dam liners, pumps and larger pans. These changes cut impurities by up to 90% and enable 2‑3 harvests per month, delivering cleaner, more consistent raw salt for iodization. The improved product now feeds TAN SALT’s 10‑ton‑per‑day plant, which supplies fortified salt to Zanzibar, DRC, Malawi and Rwanda. Higher yields and better quality are raising small‑holder incomes while boosting iodine intake for children and pregnant women.
