WD Advances Next-Generation Trusted Infrastructure with Industry’s First Post-Quantum Cryptography HDDs to Help Secure the Future of AI Data
Western Digital unveiled the industry’s first hard‑drive series that embeds post‑quantum cryptography (PQC) into its Ultrastar UltraSMR HDDs. The new Ultrastar DC HC6100 drives use NIST‑approved ML‑DSA‑87 and RSA‑3072 dual‑signing to secure firmware and key management, creating a quantum‑resistant root of trust. Currently in qualification with several hyperscale customers, the drives aim to protect AI‑generated data that must remain secure for decades. WD says the launch moves the storage market from theoretical quantum‑readiness to deployed, hardware‑level defense.
