The course bridges a critical skills gap, enabling safer, more efficient drone deployments on hazardous industrial sites and supporting the sector’s digital transformation.
Unmanned aircraft systems have moved from niche applications to core tools on refineries, power plants and construction sites. Operators can inspect hard‑to‑reach assets, capture high‑resolution data, and reduce the need for personnel at height, directly lowering incident rates. Regulators and major contractors now demand documented competence, especially where hazardous materials or critical infrastructure are involved. This shift has created a talent gap: experienced pilots lack formal training that meets the rigorous safety, compliance and data‑integrity standards required by high‑risk environments.
The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board responded with the ECITB Advanced Industrial Drone Operations Course, delivered by Global Drone Training in South Wales. The five‑day intensive blends classroom theory with live‑site flight assessments, covering risk identification, emergency procedures, airspace coordination and data handling under real‑world constraints. Funding from the Swansea Bay City Deal Skills and Talent Programme removes cost barriers, allowing qualified pilots to upskill at no charge. Completion provides a recognised credential that aligns with the ECITB’s 2023 Foundation UAS framework and satisfies principal contractors’ safety expectations.
By formalising advanced drone competence, the programme strengthens the supply chain for critical infrastructure projects across the UK. Companies can deploy UAS with confidence, knowing operators understand site‑specific hazards and regulatory compliance, which translates into faster inspections and lower downtime. As the construction and energy sectors accelerate digital transformation, similar training models are likely to proliferate, creating a new standard for aerial work on high‑risk sites. The ripple effect includes safer workplaces, richer data assets and a competitive advantage for firms that integrate certified drone services into their operational toolkit.
