The European Space Agency disclosed a cyber‑intrusion that compromised roughly 200 GB of data on a handful of external servers supporting unclassified engineering work. While no classified systems were affected, the breach highlighted how hard‑coded credentials and CI/CD pipeline access can expose supply‑chain vulnerabilities, prompting agencies to accelerate forensic analysis and harden external infrastructure. This incident underscores the growing urgency for robust space‑focused cybersecurity measures as agencies increasingly rely on cloud‑based collaboration tools.
In the commercial arena, L3Harris agreed to sell its space propulsion and power systems business to AE Industrial Partners for an enterprise value of $845 million, retaining a 40% stake to stay involved in future growth. Simultaneously, the U.S. Space Force issued RFIs for launch‑pad use at Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg, emphasizing launch‑diversity rather than expanding existing facilities. SpaceX capitalized on this momentum, becoming the first U.S. provider to lift off in 2026 from both coasts, while the Russian ISS segment finally achieved a permanent seal, ending years of leakage concerns.
Looking ahead, space law experts predict nuclear propulsion and power will dominate regulatory agendas. Executive orders are streamlining licensing for terrestrial reactors, a trend that spills into space, potentially enabling the first commercial nuclear reactor in orbit. On the telecom side, the FCC’s proposed rulemaking introduces performance‑based standards and a presumption of approval for satellite licensing, dramatically shortening approval timelines and reducing legal costs. These reforms aim to balance rapid innovation with spectrum integrity and orbital‑debris mitigation, offering a clearer pathway for emerging space enterprises.
The European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed that some of its systems have been breached after a hacker offered to sell data allegedly stolen from the organization. L3Harris Technologies has agreed to sell a majority part of its Space Propulsion and Power Systems business to private equity firm AE Industrial Partners. The United States Space Force (USSF) has issued requests for launch provider interest in launch pads at both Cape Canaveral Space Force Base, and Vandenberg Space Force Base, and more.
