SSPI Podcast
Fairfax County has become a premier space‑economy hub, leveraging a dense cluster of 150 space firms—100 of which arrived or expanded in the past three years—alongside 20,000 tech companies and proximity to the U.S. federal customer base. Victor Hoskins highlights how assets such as NASA, the Space Force, and Wallops Island launch facilities, combined with deep‑tech talent and $3 billion in private investment, position Northern Virginia to capture a rapidly expanding satellite and aerospace market.
A cornerstone of that growth is the region’s talent pipeline. Launched during COVID, the digital hub aggregates roughly 48,000 job openings and partners with over 100 universities, including historically Black institutions, to funnel graduates and career‑switchers into high‑tech roles. The AI‑driven TalentCapital platform streamlines searches, while targeted career fairs—both virtual and in‑person—serve military, cyber, and student audiences, directly addressing employer talent shortages and sustaining the 54,000 high‑tech jobs already created.
Hoskins advises emerging space regions to map their assets, recognize the broader value chain—from quantum communications to Mars‑fuel production—and build collaborative ecosystems. By aligning economic‑development incentives, academic programs, and federal partnerships, states can replicate Fairfax’s model and tap the projected $1.8 trillion space industry. SSPI membership amplifies this effort, providing international visibility and industry connections that further accelerate Northern Virginia’s role in the next generation of the global space economy.
How does a region become a launchpad for the next space economy? In this episode of The SSPI Podcast, Executive Director Tamara Bond-Williams sits down with Victor Hoskins, President and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA), one of SSPI's newest corporate members. Together they explore how Fairfax County's powerful technology base, world-class universities, and proximity to the U.S. federal government are fueling investment in satellite, aerospace, and quantum innovation. Hoskins shares how FCEDA is building a complete ecosystem—from K-12 STEM outreach to AI-driven workforce pipelines—and why the region's 150 space companies are positioning Northern Virginia as a global hub for the $1.8 trillion space industry of the future.
