There’s something special about returning to conferences you’ve been part of before. It was wonderful to be back for Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking 's 2nd Annual Global Marketing Conference. It was a joy to reconnect with familiar faces, meet new ones, and, especially, to reunite with a fellow speaker I hadn’t seen in over a decade. Having spent 5+ years as an event marketing manager, I can’t help but notice—and truly appreciate—the level of thought that Gugu-Lisa Zwane-Johnson , Yolisa Lolonga , and the Mela Events team put into every detail. From the opening moments that had Standard Bank’s marketers smiling over beautifully designed stationery, to the Blue Flame theme, to an intentionally relaxed setup that encouraged creativity and conversation. The mix of sofas and tables for lunch setting, the lounge-style seating with couches and sofas instead of formal round tables, and even the menu and floral arrangements were all thoughtfully designed to support networking and reinforce the theme. Creating a great event experience is meticulous, behind-the-scenes work—details the event team sweats over, yet most attendees never consciously notice. Isn’t that modern marketing at its best? When it’s done well, it feels so natural that people assume it’s always been that way. I have deep respect for event managers. They deserve far more recognition than they typically receive. The dinner gala felt like a throwback to Corporate America’s holiday parties from the late ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s—when people dressed up, let loose, and celebrated in the kind of glamorous scenes you usually only see in movies. There was a time when working in Corporate America was genuinely FUN... To the Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking marketing team: thank you so much for having me. A client recently asked me to create a marketing enablement strategy for their new Customer Success (CS) team. That kicked off a bigger conversation with their VP of Marketing: 👉 Should marketing own revenue beyond lead gen and MQLs? Here’s the reality:...
I loved this year’s Super Bowl—not just because of the game, but because of the Patriots’ story. I was rooting for the Seahawks (after living in Portland, Oregon, for over two decades), yet I have deep respect for the team that...
