China’s Robotics Ecosystem: Cheap, Advanced, Not to Underestimate
"The Chinese aren't ahead in robotics." Yeah, today they are slightly behind in AI. But anyone who thinks they are dramatically behind is an idiot. World Models or VLAs are raining out of the sky and the Chinese have warehouses full of people training them. Now USA will block Chinese robots from its shores, which still are rich compared to most places in the world, but do not underestimate the Chinese. I keep hearing from people in the robotics industry who go to China just how much more advanced China's ecosystem is. One guy, who was leading an unconference I recently attended in San Francisco for hardware developers told everyone: "it's 20x cheaper to build a hardware company in China than it is in USA." At @fdotinc, one of the best hardware accelerators in San Francisco, the leadership there literally told all of its startups "go to China to get your hardware built." That said, we can put it all together. At @1x_tech's launch I talked with a group who had just purchased one of its robots, even though we all knew it was teleoperated, to help spur the American industry to both finish off its automation, but to help there be a customer base for manufacturing the things here in USA. That all said, the amount of cope I see about China is extraordinary. So few Americans understand just how far ahead China is. It's time we all change our beliefs. Believing China isn't getting there will just lead us to ruin.
