AI Automation Opens Opportunities, Not Fear, Like Past Machines
Speaking up for humans. @togelius is right when he says we need a new language when we look at AI. My mom soldered Apple II motherboards in our kitchen when I was 13. It took her about half an hour to do that job. My first job at HP was running a machine that did the same in 20 seconds. Yet I meet people all the time who solder things 45 years later. I have known all my life that automation will take my job. But yet all it does is open up more opportunities to make ourselves better. Fear of the future keeps us from building a better future. Julian is right. AI is opening up new opportunities to do the things we love to do better. And talking out of fear will keep us from being better. That said this time the technology is hitting all of us at the same time, or will over the next few years and that is something we never had to deal with, and will bring many pain that I acknowledge. Our future was made better by the machines of the past and the same will happen here. Humans who hang onto the old way of doing things are not giving us the answer either. They are keeping us from reaching our potential. And AI people who say that AI is going to steal our jobs and even our humanity aren’t leading us in a good direction either. I am talking to myself since I find myself thinking and saying that sometimes. Heard, and will make more of an effort to change myself.
