Missing a $1M Goal Fueled a $169M Exit
My goal was $1M in revenue by age 21 but I missed it by 18 days. It still led to a $169M exit. Here's the story👇 At 16, I was making $4k a year building websites in Bradenton, Florida. I read "Think and Grow Rich", wrote down one goal in a notebook: → Build a company to $1M in sales before turning 21. No team. No investors. No idea how I'd get there. So I did the only thing I could think of. I sent a press release to the local paper: "16-Year-Old Running a Bradenton Web Design Agency." Got front-page coverage. Guy named J.R. Rogers called and hired me as VP of Marketing for his 3-person company. We scaled it: $2k/month → $200k/month in one year That was enough to keep going. At 18, I moved to UNC Chapel Hill. In my first year, I met my co-founder, Aaron, at the entrepreneurship club. We started iContact in 2002. Three years later, iContact crossed $1M in sales. On September 1st, 2005. 18 days after I turned 21. The goal I failed to hit still took me: $4k/year → $50M in revenue → $169M exit Most founders set goals they know they can hit: • Safe goals • Comfortable goals Problem is: a goal you're confident about doesn't change your behavior. A goal that scares you does. Set the goal that pulls you forward. Miss it by 18 days if you have to. You'll still end up somewhere you never would have found playing it safe. --- Today, I run these private communities that might help you: → SaasRise : for founders scaling from $1M to $100M → GrowthRise: for B2B Sales and Marketing leaders I also run Pulse. We are reinventing the daily news consumption in the age of AI. (link in comments)
