NT TOs Win $54M Compensation over McArthur River
Traditional Owners in the Northern Territory have secured more than $54 million in compensation from the Federal Court for the loss of native‑title rights linked to the McArthur River mine. The judgment is the first Australian ruling to award “just terms” compensation after the fact, rather than at the time of land acquisition. The court found the government and Glencore failed to properly consult and compensate Indigenous communities during mine expansion. The funds will be held in a trust for cultural, environmental and community projects.
