Keyless Car Theft Devices Outlawed at Last, as Police Get New Powers to Track Stolen Vehicles
The UK’s Crime and Policing Act 2026 has made it a criminal offence to make, possess, import, adapt, supply or offer to supply electronic devices such as signal relays, jammers and CAN‑bus injectors that facilitate keyless car theft. The legislation also grants police the power to enter premises without a warrant to seize stolen vehicles that are being tracked electronically. Offenders face unlimited fines and up to five years in prison, a sharp upgrade from the previous rule that only penalised use of the gadgets. The move comes as police estimate 60 % of vehicle thefts in London involve such devices, with 122,000 thefts reported across England and Wales in the past year.
