Why It Matters

Confirming extraterrestrial life would transform our understanding of biology, planetary science and humanity’s place in the universe, and would drive major shifts in funding and exploration strategy. The prospect also pressures scientists to refine detection methods and prepare for high-stakes verification and communication protocols.

Summary

Scientists say the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is in its infancy but optimism is high that we are not alone. Researchers maintain a scientific standard: belief in aliens is tentative until an unambiguous signal or incontrovertible biosignature is detected. Possible breakthroughs include a clear SETI transmission pinpointed to a star, or strong biosignatures—past or present—on Mars or Europa that defy nonbiological explanations. Any such discovery would immediately reshape research priorities and prompt follow-up missions to confirm and study the evidence.

Original Description

Astrobiologist, David Grinspoon from the Planetary Science Institute thinks so. "It might not happen for a thousand years, but it could happen next year", he says of the chance of receiving a signal from life deep in space. And even if that wasn't enough, the chance of finding bio signatures on Mars or on Europa is high, giving us even more reason to go back there.
