Why It Matters

KISS accelerates the translation of visionary space concepts into viable projects, giving governments and private firms a faster path to breakthrough missions.

Key Takeaways

  • KISS transforms speculative concepts into actionable space exploration projects.
  • Think‑do tank unites experts to accelerate breakthrough space technologies.
  • Ambitious ideas are filtered into realistic missions for future generations.
  • KISS fosters collaboration that makes currently impossible space goals feasible.
  • Institute serves as incubator for next‑generation observational and exploration concepts.

Summary

The Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) positions itself as a hybrid think‑do tank dedicated to reshaping space science and exploration. Founded to catalyze bold concepts, it brings together leading researchers, engineers, and industry veterans under one roof.

KISS’s core methodology is to capture far‑out, even “crazy,” ideas and channel them through rigorous feasibility studies, prototyping, and partnership building. By treating speculative visions as project pipelines, the institute turns imagination into concrete mission concepts, from advanced telescopes to novel propulsion systems.

As the video emphasizes, KISS aims to “make what is presently impossible possible,” and its experts describe the process as turning “audacious missions” into actionable plans. The institute highlights recent workshops that produced a roadmap for a lunar‑orbiting interferometer and a modular deep‑space habitat.

If successful, KISS could accelerate technology readiness, lower entry barriers for commercial players, and inform government roadmaps, ultimately expanding humanity’s capability to observe the universe and venture farther into space.

Original Description

The Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) was established at Caltech in January 2008 with an initial grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation. The Institute is a "think and do tank," that is shaping the future of space exploration, science, and technology through:
Developing ideas and concepts that can revolutionize space science and engineering
Fostering collaboration bridging Caltech and JPL, and integrating the world’s space leaders into our community
Empowering future leaders of the space science and technology community
This unique organization links the study elements of a think tank with the implementation elements of designing and developing prototypes. The Institute is centered on the intellectual, instrumentation, and research strengths of the Caltech Campus and JPL — and augments those strengths by inviting external experts from academia, government, and industry to engage in its programs. The Institute also provides opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to actively participate in cutting edge space mission research and learning. The Institute supports significant outreach to the public and the wider technical/scientific community via open lectures and other events.
