The partnership ties critical power generation directly to data‑center growth, ensuring reliable capacity for Texas’s booming digital economy. It showcases how integrated energy‑data solutions can accelerate market entry while supporting grid stability.
The rapid expansion of cloud services, AI workloads has turned Texas into a hotspot for data‑center investment. CyrusOne’s latest announcement, a 760 MW campus beside Calpine’s Freestone Energy Center, reflects that surge. By securing two 380 MW power contracts through Constellation’s Calpine unit, the developer guarantees the electricity needed to support thousands of servers while keeping latency low for Dallas‑Fort Worth enterprises. The site, located roughly 90 miles south of Dallas, adds to CyrusOne’s growing portfolio of more than 50 facilities across the United States and Europe.
Co‑locating the campus with an existing natural‑gas combined‑cycle plant offers distinct operational benefits. The proximity eliminates the need for new transmission lines, reduces interconnection costs, and leverages Calpine’s proven generation fleet, which supplies over 2.7 GW nationwide. Constellation’s ‘Powered Land Capabilities’ package bundles generation, land rights, and grid access, delivering predictability and speed‑to‑market for large‑load customers. This integrated model enhances grid reliability for the surrounding community and provides CyrusOne with a resilient power source that can scale alongside future demand spikes.
The partnership signals a broader shift toward vertically integrated energy‑data solutions as the digital economy matures. With Constellation completing its acquisition of Calpine in early 2025, the combined entity can now offer end‑to‑end services that align power generation with data‑center siting, a competitive edge in a market where uptime is paramount. The project is expected to create construction jobs and long‑term operational roles, bolstering the local economy in Freestone County. Industry observers see this as a template for future collaborations that marry clean‑energy transitions with the relentless growth of AI‑driven workloads.

CyrusOne is planning a new data center campus in Texas, colocating next to an existing natural‑gas power plant.
Constellation and CyrusOne this week announced that Calpine LLC, a business unit of Constellation, signed a new 380 MW agreement with CyrusOne to connect and serve a new data center adjacent to the Freestone Energy Center in Freestone County.

“This agreement reinforces CyrusOne's commitment to meeting customer demand in Texas,” said Eric Schwartz, CEO of CyrusOne. “Partnering with Constellation and Calpine enables us to deliver reliable, scalable infrastructure while ensuring grid reliability for local communities.”
Freestone County is located about 90 miles (144.8 km) south of Dallas. The Freestone Energy Center is a natural‑gas‑fired combined‑cycle facility situated on roughly 506 acres near Fairfield.
Calpine has also entered into an exclusive agreement to provide power, grid connectivity, and site infrastructure for Phase II, which will add another 380 MW.
“This agreement with CyrusOne demonstrates Constellation's ability to meet the growing demand from the data economy while maintaining grid reliability, creating jobs and economic growth, and benefiting local customers and communities,” said Joe Dominguez, Constellation president and CEO. “By leveraging existing infrastructure and grid connections, we can help customers move quickly while ensuring continued reliability for Texans. With deep expertise and a coast‑to‑coast presence, Constellation is helping lay the foundation that will keep America at the forefront of AI and digital technology during this defining moment in our nation's history.”
The announcement follows a similar agreement sealed last year between CyrusOne and Calpine for another gas‑power‑plant site outside the Dallas‑Fort Worth area.
CyrusOne is developing a 400 MW campus adjacent to Calpine’s Thad Hill Energy Center in Bosque County. The first data center is currently under construction and is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2026.
KKR‑owned CyrusOne operates more than 50 data centers across the U.S. and European markets. In Texas, it has more than 14 data centers—both planned and operational—with over half located around Dallas‑Fort Worth.
Calpine is the largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources in the U.S., operating a fleet of 79 energy facilities with a generating capacity of more than 2.7 GW. Constellation announced it was acquiring Calpine in January 2025; the deal closed last month.
Constellation said the project will utilize the company’s Powered Land Capabilities, a suite of products and services designed to support large‑load customers by pairing generation, land, and grid access in a way that “prioritizes reliability, speed‑to‑market, and predictability for the broader system.”
