Routing, Not Model Supremacy, Determines AI Business Success
Two AI models stopped answering this month. Only one came back. Google's Gemini went dark for hours — a technical outage. It recovered. Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 went dark three days after launch — pulled by the US government over a discovered jailbreak. Eight days later, it's still offline. No return date. Here's what both events revealed: Companies that had already set up automatic model routing kept working through it. Nobody touched a setting. But routing solves uptime. It doesn't solve accuracy. And the benchmarks? Two testing groups scored the same models the same week and crowned two different winners. The frontier model that "won" one test is the same one you currently can't buy, route to, or build a product around. The open-weight challenger is the only one still running. As @Box CEO @levie puts it: "The businesses that win won't be the ones with the single best AI model. They'll be the ones that can tell, automatically and on every request, which job needs the expensive model and which job doesn't." His argument gets harder to dismiss now that the "best" model can vanish within days of becoming available. If your AI strategy depends on routing to the single smartest model on the market, ask yourself: What happens the week a government turns that model off?
